Réunion
Wedged between Madagascar and Mauritius in the Indian Ocean lies a little paradise called Réunion. This tiny volcanic island has been part of the French Colonial Empire for 400 years and retains the character of a remote outpost.
Aside from its coral reefs and numerous beaches, it is the island’s landscapes that attract most visitors. Almost half of Réunion is a protected National Park with numerous hiking trails for the active traveler. The island has many freshwater lakes, waterfalls, mountains and volcanoes to explore. A helicopter ride is highly recommended and for the more adventurous, paragliding is a popular activity too.
With direct flights from Johannesburg on a daily basis, this destination can be combined with any Southern African safari and it is an easy self-drive destination to boot.
Best time to travel: May - December.
